It was built by master carpenter Henry Dillon for physician Tazewell Headen and later housed prominent local citizens. Its early twentieth-century additions and surviving antebellum outbuildings add to its architectural interest.","narrative":"Glenanna is a two-story, double-pile brick house on a rise along West Main Street in Floyd, Virginia, built in 1849 for physician Tazewell Headen. Master builder Henry Dillon, an Irish immigrant who also built the original courthouse, Jacksonville Academy and the Presbyterian Church, constructed it. The house is large but plainly finished, with Flemish bond brick on the front, a hipped metal roof, six-over-six windows and simple interior woodwork. Later owners included lawyer and newspaper editor Henry Lane, Dr. John Stuart, and Dr. Thomas Howard, a Civil War surgeon who practiced in Floyd for 51 years. In the 1910s Howard's widow added the two-story Ionic portico, balcony, kitchen wing, side porch and conservatory. Behind the house stand antebellum brick outbuildings, including a kitchen, dairy and smokehouse, plus log buildings used as a stable and crib. The property was recognized for its local architectural importance.","period_of_significance":"1849-1910s","architect_builder":"Dillon, Henry","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as well cared for with a high level of integrity; currently rented, with the family owner expecting to occupy it after the renters move and planning to restore the outbuildings.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.699311-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/91/6806/41680691/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/02000523.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000523/95d689fcbb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000523/95d689fcbb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Skye Marthaler","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Glenanna.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Skye Marthaler</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Glenanna.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"05001266","name":"Floyd Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/floyd-historic-district-05001266/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680691","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glenanna","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712369"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/floyd-county/glenanna-02000523/"}
