Built about 1750 in Hanover County, it was dismantled and rebuilt on its present site in 1928.","why_significant":"The nomination argues significance under Criterion C for the unusual 18th-century features of the house: rusticated stone trim around the openings, a bold Doric order in the center passage, and fine late Georgian doorways. It is also significant as an example of the Colonial Revival movement, because a deteriorating plantation house was dismantled and reconstructed as a 20th-century suburban mansion using most of its original fabric.","narrative":"Fairfield, originally called Rocky Mills, is a two-story Georgian brick mansion on landscaped grounds between River Road and the James River in Henrico County. It was built around 1750 in Hanover County by John Syme II, then taken apart in 1928 and re-erected on its present site. Most of the historic fabric was reused, including interior woodwork and the rusticated stone trim around the openings. The rebuilding deepened the plan to fit bathrooms and service areas and added a pedimented center pavilion on the south front. Inside, a wide arch topped by a Doric entablature dominates the center passage, and the trim reflects several periods, including c. 1790 and c. 1830 work. Herman Louis Duhring, Jr. was architect for the reconstruction, and Charles Gillette designed part of the landscape. Four contributing buildings and structures stand on the property. It was listed for its architecture and as a prominent example of Colonial Revival reconstruction.","period_of_significance":"1928-1951","architect_builder":"Herman Louis Duhring, Jr. (architect for reconstruction)","architectural_style":"Colonial/Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as a single dwelling (mansion) with three contributing outbuildings and a non-contributing swimming pool; the main house was rebuilt in 1928 and a kitchen wing was added around 1936.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.763095-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/39/6812/41681239/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/02000513.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000513/a6df200538-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000513/a6df200538-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown authorUnknown author","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rocky_Mills_Mansion_VA.jpeg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown authorUnknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rocky_Mills_Mansion_VA.jpeg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"71000982","name":"James River and Kanawha Canal Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/james-river-and-kanawha-canal-historic-district-71000982/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681239","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocky_Mills","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7355847"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/henrico-county/rocky-mills-02000513/"}
