It centers on the Courthouse Square and includes commercial blocks on Bank and Washington Streets and surrounding neighborhoods of houses dating from the late 18th century to 1950. The county seat was located at the site in 1765, and the area grew around the courthouse, the prison and Alexander Boyd's tavern, built around 1785. The present courthouse, completed in 1842, is a Roman Revival building with a hexastyle Ionic portico that resembles the Virginia State Capitol. A fire in 1907 destroyed much of the earlier commercial district, so many downtown buildings date from the early 20th century. The district also includes churches, schools, a 1939 library, a town hall and a wide range of houses in Greek Revival, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival and Bungalow styles. The district contains 215 contributing and 146 noncontributing resources.","period_of_significance":"1760-1950","architect_builder":"Matthew Mills, builder; William A.
