It shows a restrained, backcountry interpretation of a nationally popular style. The original hall-and-parlor plan and much original fabric survive despite a 1950s rear addition.","narrative":"Set on a two-acre parcel in Middle Creek Township, south of Apex, this two-story frame house was built in the early nineteenth century along what was once the Smithfield-Pittsboro road. It follows a hall-and-parlor plan with two exterior-end Flemish bond chimneys, six-over-nine windows, beaded weatherboards and a boxed cornice. Inside, simple Federal mantels, paneled wainscot, six-panel doors and pine sheathing survive, some of it hidden beneath later sheet rock. A mortise-and-tenon smokehouse of about the same era stands nearby. A 1950s renovation added a rear kitchen and bedroom, aluminum siding covers most walls, and the front portico was rebuilt in 1989 from evidence in the frame. The house was listed for its architecture. Most of Wake County's surviving pre-Civil War houses lie in the north and east, and this is one of only three intact Federal-period houses in the southern and western parts of the county. It shows how a national style was expressed locally through carpentry and proportion rather than ornament.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as being in excellent condition, with a 1950s rear addition, a 1989 reconstructed front portico and late twentieth-century repairs.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:53.071844-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/33/7185/47718533/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/02000498.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000498/4d2fc45e73-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000498/4d2fc45e73-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Pithon314","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Utley-Council_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pithon314</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Utley-Council_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718533","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utley-Council_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7902908"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/wake-county/utley-council-house-02000498/"}
