The church was built in 1921-22 and designed by Ludwig W. Eisinger.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the church is exceptionally significant in art for its stained glass windows by Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall, which it describes as unique in the world. It is also significant in architecture as an essentially intact example of early-20th-century Neo-Gothic village church design. Later additions were built to blend with the original design.","narrative":"Union Church of Pocantico Hills is a small fieldstone Neo-Gothic church built in 1921-22 as a Protestant community church in a hamlet of Westchester County, New York. Architect Ludwig W. Eisinger designed it, and the land came from John D. Rockefeller, Sr. A parish hall followed in 1930-31 and a Sunday school wing in 1957, both matching the original style, and a Tudor Revival manse dates from 1930. The church is valued first for its windows. The rose window, completed in 1954 and installed in 1956, was the last completed work of Henri Matisse. Nine windows by Marc Chagall were installed between 1964 and 1966, including a large Good Samaritan window. The windows replaced the original opalescent glass and were given by the Rockefeller family. The building is also regarded as a nearly textbook example of early twentieth-century Neo-Gothic village church design, with a rectangular plan, gabled nave and entrance porch with bell tower. Its surroundings of houses, woodland and open land have changed little.","period_of_significance":"1921-1966","architect_builder":"Eisinger, Ludwig W.","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th century revival: Late Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a church, with a museum function also listed; the setting is described as little changed since construction.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.258357-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/02000447.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000447/d57e55d1bb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000447/d57e55d1bb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Ɱ","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:UnionPocantico.tif\" rel=\"noopener\">Ɱ</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:UnionPocantico.tif"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100004554","name":"Rockefeller Pocantico Hills Estate Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/rockefeller-pocantico-hills-estate-historic-district-100004554/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323271","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Church_of_Pocantico_Hills","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7885533"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/union-church-of-pocantico-hills-02000447/"}
