Jones III and designed by architect Martin E. Boyer.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is among the most noteworthy Tudor Revival buildings in Charlotte and the most outstanding example of the style in Eastover. It is also a hallmark of the revivalist work of architect Martin E. Boyer. It is judged locally significant under Criterion C for architecture, and it retains good integrity despite changes made after 1979.","narrative":"Set on a 1.1-acre lot at the corner of Cherokee Road and Fenton Place in Charlotte's Eastover neighborhood, this two-and-a-half-story house was built between 1929 and 1931 for attorney, judge and later congressman Hamilton C. Jones III. Architect Martin E. Boyer, regarded as the city's premier revivalist designer, planned it in the Tudor Revival style. Its walls are russet granite ashlar over terra cotta tile, topped with a clay tile roof and detailed with carved limestone, wood, patterned brick, swirled stucco, wrought iron and copper. Inside, plaster walls, tulip poplar woodwork and repeated Tudor arches give a consistent medieval character. Craftsmen worked carefully during the Depression, and Boyer himself shaped the stucco grapevine frieze on the facade. Changes made after the family sold the house in 1979 are mostly at the rear. Together with a contributing stone playhouse, the house is considered locally significant as an outstanding example of Tudor Revival architecture and of Boyer's work.","period_of_significance":"1931","architect_builder":"Martin E. Boyer (architect); Blythe-Isenhour (general contractor)","architectural_style":"Tudor Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Remains a single-family dwelling; the current owners are described as preserving its Tudor Revival character. It was designated a local historic landmark in 1986.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:53.345648-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/72/7212/47721272/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/02000439.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000439/c63b3b140b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000439/c63b3b140b-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hamilton_Jones_III_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hamilton_Jones_III_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721272","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamilton_C._Jones_III_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19462640"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/mecklenburg-county/jones-iii-hamilton-c-house-02000439/"}
