It has been occupied by the Kelly family since construction and retains nearly all original exterior and interior fabric. It was also the home of Alexander Kelly, a wealthy planter, sheriff, legislator and carriage-works co-founder.","narrative":"Set on a knoll above McLendon's Creek northwest of Carthage, this two-story frame house was completed in 1842 and is the largest surviving antebellum house in Moore County. Its transitional Federal and Greek Revival design includes a hip roof, molded weatherboard, ornate Federal entrances with fanlights and sidelights, and matching pedimented porches at front and rear. Inside, a center hall plan holds wainscots, crown moldings, heart pine floors and tripartite mantels. One parlor mantel bears a small primitive painting of the house dated 1843. Built for lawyer John B. Kelly, it was later the home of his nephew Alexander Kelly, a planter, sheriff, state legislator and co-founder of a Carthage carriage works. The house once anchored a 3,000-acre plantation, now subdivided. It has stayed in the Kelly family since construction, so its exterior and interior remain almost unaltered. This high degree of integrity and its stylish design are the basis for its listing under the architecture criterion.","period_of_significance":"1842","architect_builder":"Unknown (family tradition credits Alexander Kelly as amateur designer, built with slave labor)","architectural_style":"Federal, Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Remains in the hands of the Kelly descendants; described as in a pristine state of preservation with original exterior and interior fabric largely intact.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:53.534986-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/32/7214/47721432/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/02000438.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000438/248db173b5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000438/248db173b5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ALEXANDER_KELLY_HOUSE,_CARTHAGE,_MOORE_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721432","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Kelly_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19462702"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/moore-county/kelly-alexander-house-02000438/"}
