The farmhouse was built in 1873-1874 for Addison Holden.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the farm is locally significant for its largely intact complex representing diversified and specialized chicken farming in the first half of the twentieth century. The farmhouse is significant as a fine vernacular tri-gable I-house with machine-made details and as one of very few dwellings built in Orange County during Reconstruction.","narrative":"Holden-Roberts Farm lies about three miles east of Hillsborough in Orange County, North Carolina, and covers roughly 68.7 acres of fields and woodland. Its focal point is a frame tri-gable I-house begun in 1873 and finished in 1874 for Addison Holden, half-brother of Reconstruction Governor William Woods Holden. The house has a center hall plan, six-over-six windows, a double-leaf entry, and Greek Revival mantels, with a kitchen-parlor-porch addition from about 1900 and a wing from about 1930. Eight contributing outbuildings date from 1900 to 1950, including frame chicken houses built around 1910 by Cain Roberts, who ran a large chicken and egg operation. The farm is locally significant under Criterion A for diversified and specialized chicken farming in the early twentieth century. The house is significant under Criterion C because it is one of very few Reconstruction-era dwellings in Orange County and retains many original details.","period_of_significance":"1873-1874","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Tri-gable I-house with modest Greek Revival detailing","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Agricultural use has changed; livestock and poultry are no longer raised, and the farm produces grass hay.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:42.317863-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/32/7216/47721632/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/02000436.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000436/1d36c232a2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000436/1d36c232a2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HOLDEN-ROBERTS_FARM,_HILLSBOROUGH,_ORANGE_COUNTY,_NC.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721632","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holden%E2%80%93Roberts_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19880287"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/orange-county/holden-roberts-farm-02000436/"}
