It measures about 24' x 66' and has a low gable roof with later additions.","why_significant":"The school is the sole surviving property directly tied to African American education in Lampasas and reflects the era of legally mandated segregated schools. It served Black children for over sixty years, until public schools integrated in 1963. It is also a late and unusually substantial stone example compared with most Black schools in Texas, which were wood or brick.","narrative":"Built in 1923 at 514 College Street, the Lampasas Colored School is a two-room limestone schoolhouse with a low gable roof, rubble walls, corner quoins and a stone belt course. It replaced an earlier wooden school on the same lot, funded through a 1922 bond issue that also paid for work on the white schools. Additions came in 1948, when an entry foyer, indoor restrooms and a stage extension were built, and in 1959, when a concrete block kitchen was added. The school served Black students until Lampasas public schools integrated in 1963, and enrollment never exceeded 55 after it opened. Teachers and parents repeatedly sought better facilities, and students had limited access to white school facilities. It is the only remaining property directly associated with African American education in the community. Despite deterioration and alterations to its sides and rear, the front elevation remains intact, and the building keeps much of its original character.","period_of_significance":"1923-1963","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"No style (vernacular)","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as vacant, work in progress; the building has suffered from lack of maintenance and its interior finishes are damaged or dilapidated.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:22.99435-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/17/9728/40972817/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/02000404.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000404/c7dda0233e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000404/c7dda0233e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LampasasColoredschool1.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LampasasColoredschool1.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40972817","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110001264"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/lampasas-county/lampasas-colored-school-02000404/"}
