The Queen Anne sanctuary was designed in 1893-94 and is attached to an earlier parish hall that was remodeled in 1928.","why_significant":"The form marks Criteria A and C, with Architecture and Religion as areas of significance. The church is a largely intact Queen Anne design of 1893-94. It also reflects the long growth of the Housatonic congregation, founded in 1841, and the village civic leaders who funded it.","narrative":"Housatonic Congregational Church is a shingled Queen Anne sanctuary on Main Street in the village of Housatonic, in Great Barrington. It was designed in 1893-94 on part of the foundation of an 1842 church. The cruciform building has an asymmetrical front, a two-story belfry tower with an open belfry, large round-arched stained glass windows, and a pressed metal ceiling inside. The belfry holds the original 1845 bell. Behind the sanctuary is a parish hall, built as a lecture hall in 1867, which was enlarged and resheathed in Colonial Revival style by Pittsfield architects Harding & Seaver in 1928. A dry-laid stone wall that once supported a horse shed also survives on the lot. The congregation formed in 1841 and grew steadily. Local men such as Deacon H.H.B. Turner led fundraising for the 1894 building, which replaced a church that had become too small. Its significance rests on its architecture and its place in the village's religious life.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Harding & Seaver Architects of Pittsfield (1928 hall renovation); stained glass by Redding Baird & Co.; original bell cast by Andrew Meneely Bell Company","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Queen Anne and Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a church; the sanctuary is described as remarkably intact with only a few interior alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:05.107783-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/20/7943/63794320/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/02000377.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000377/f6f17550d1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000377/f6f17550d1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Albany, NY, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Housatonic_Congregational_Church,_Housatonic,_Massachusetts.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Albany, NY, United States</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Housatonic_Congregational_Church,_Housatonic,_Massachusetts.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794320","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Housatonic_Congregational_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715560"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/berkshire-county/housatonic-congregational-church-02000377/"}
