It lies between First and Fifth avenues and between Trigg Street and Brookland Park Boulevard, and was laid out as a streetcar suburb from about 1890.","why_significant":"The nomination presents the district as an early Richmond streetcar suburb whose growth ran from about 1890 into the 1920s and later. It holds a large, well-preserved collection of Queen Anne, American Foursquare, Bungalow, Colonial Revival and Gothic Revival buildings, along with garages, shops, lodges and churches. It is marked for association with broad patterns of history and for architectural character.","narrative":"Chestnut Hill/Plateau is a streetcar-era neighborhood in Richmond, Virginia, forming the southern end of Highland Park. Developers bought the 135-acre Mount Comfort property in 1889 and laid it out as a grid of numbered avenues and tree-named cross streets. Growth was slow at first, with only about sixty houses standing in 1901, but building continued into the 1920s and later. Most of the 742 resources are two-story frame houses. Early examples include narrow side-passage dwellings and elaborate Queen Anne houses with towers and wraparound porches, while later blocks hold many American Foursquare houses and Bungalows, often built in groups by builders or real estate companies. Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival houses, a Greek Revival house predating the suburb, small commercial buildings, fraternal lodges and Gothic Revival churches add variety. Many garages also survive, some designed to match their houses. The area is recognized for its intact streetcar-suburb development and the range of house types built over several decades.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Carneal and Johnston (architects of the Beardsley house); Charles Robinson (architect of Northside Baptist Church); Arnheim Brothers (builders of the Beardsley house); other builders and developers named","architectural_style":"Queen Anne; Colonial Revival; Bungalow/Craftsman (also American Foursquare, Gothic Revival, Tudor Revival)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Current functions listed include single and multiple dwellings, businesses, meeting halls and religious facilities; the district has 742 resources, 83 of them noncontributing.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.812039-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/1/6830/41683001/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/02000366.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000366/06c559cfd2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000366/06c559cfd2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Parismina","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Highland_Park_Southern_Tip.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Parismina</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Highland_Park_Southern_Tip.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"71000982","name":"James River and Kanawha Canal Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/james-river-and-kanawha-canal-historic-district-71000982/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683001","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chestnut_Hill%E2%80%93Plateau_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5093937"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/richmond/chestnut-hill-plateau-historic-district-02000366/"}
