It retains its original massing, siding, windows, entrance and stained glass. Its later uses as a military billet, warehouse and senior center add to its community history.","narrative":"Washington School, at 1910 California Street in Eureka, is a two-story wooden schoolhouse built in 1902 and opened in fall 1903 with 86 students in grades one through six. San Francisco architect Lewis D. Stone drew the plans, and construction cost $12,860. The building has a hipped roof, a symmetrical facade, and Colonial Revival detailing, including an arched entrance flanked by double columns and stained-glass sidelights. It was one of six square wooden grammar schools in Eureka, and the other five were condemned as fire hazards and demolished in 1938. Washington School survived and later housed troops during World War II, hosted boxing matches in its basement, and served as a school district warehouse and woodshop. Renovated in 1983, it became a senior center. It is listed as the last remaining square school building in Humboldt County, with its original siding, windows, and balustrade intact.","period_of_significance":"1902 - 1952","architect_builder":"Stone, Lewis D. - architect; Stimpson, D.P. - contractor","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"In use as the Humboldt Senior Resource Center, a senior center since 1983.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:26.909325-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/02000329.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000329/3781f53002-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000329/3781f53002-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"NoeHill","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Washington_School_in_Eureka_California_July_2007.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">NoeHill</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Washington_School_in_Eureka_California_July_2007.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123858806","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q133266921"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/humboldt-county/washington-school-02000329/"}
