Its Federal first floor and Greek Revival second floor record successive 19th-century renovations, and the land has a documented Meherrin Indian pre-history.","narrative":"Aspen Lawn is a two-story, five-bay timber-frame plantation house on a high brick foundation, set on about 600 acres bordering the Meherrin River in lower Southampton County. Tax records suggest it was built around 1798 for John Myrick Jr. The first floor keeps Federal woodwork, hand-wrought nails, a wide center passage and original marbleized and grained paint. The second story was added in the 19th century and shows Greek Revival moldings, two-panel doors and cut nails. Further changes around 1868 included a louvered hall partition. The Drewry family left it as a primary residence in the 1890s but never sold it, and the house escaped modernization such as electricity and bathrooms. It has been vacant since the early 1960s, and restoration is under way. The nomination values it as a surviving example of post-Revolutionary planter-society architecture, on land that also holds Native American archaeological evidence and a slave graveyard.","period_of_significance":"c. 1798-1890","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal; Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The house is being restored by its owners after near ruin in the 1980s; the roof was replaced, windows boarded and the foundation rebuilt, and the front porch is being reconstructed.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:01.128451-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/93/6836/41683693/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/02000319.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000319/01c4f184cb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000319/01c4f184cb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Ser Amantio di Nicolao","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Aspen_Lawn,_Drewryville,_Virginia_at_dusk.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ser Amantio di Nicolao</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Aspen_Lawn,_Drewryville,_Virginia_at_dusk.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683693","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspen_Lawn","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15192709"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/southampton-county/aspen-lawn-02000319/"}
