It was first built in 1824, doubled in 1840 and lengthened in 1888.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the lock is a well-preserved example of Erie Canal masonry engineering and an illustration of the canal's transportation history under Criteria A and C. It shows the canal's evolution from the original canal through the First Enlargement and the 1880s lengthening. It is also the only surviving double lock extended on the berm side rather than the towpath side.","narrative":"Enlarged Double Lock No. 33 is a cut-limestone canal lock on the abandoned Old Erie Canal right-of-way, just south of St. Johnsville in Montgomery County, New York. It began in 1824 as a single-chamber lock on the original Erie Canal. In 1840, during the First Enlargement, a second chamber and a center pier with a sluice were added, creating the double lock. In 1888 the south chamber was lengthened westward on the berm side to 210 feet. Only three locks were extended this way, and this is the only surviving double lock with that modification. The finely fitted ashlar masonry is largely intact, and portions of plank floors and collapsed timber gates remain submerged. After the Barge Canal opened in 1918 the lock fell into disuse and became a village trash dump. Local volunteers began reclaiming it in 1997. It was listed for its transportation history and its engineering and masonry craftsmanship.","period_of_significance":"1824-1918","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"No style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed in the form as vacant/not in use. The chambers remain partially watered, and local volunteers have been reclaiming and restoring the lock since 1997.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:54.123443-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/02000315.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000315/70392d05bf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000315/70392d05bf-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jud McCranie","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Erie_Canal_Lock_33,_Montgomery_County,_NY,_US.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jud McCranie</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Erie_Canal_Lock_33,_Montgomery_County,_NY,_US.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319000","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enlarged_Double_Lock_No._33_Old_Erie_Canal","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5379049"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/montgomery-county/enlarged-double-lock-no-33-old-erie-canal-02000315/"}
