It also reflects the settlement of the area by Scottish immigrants seeking religious freedom, and served as the main center of social activity for that community.","narrative":"Built in 1853 on a rural ridge in Potsdam, St. Lawrence County, this small wood-frame church was erected by Scottish immigrant families who had been traveling seven or eight miles to worship elsewhere. Land for the church and its adjoining cemetery was donated by George Redington. The gable-front building has clapboard siding, a center entry with Greek Revival paneled doors, and a hand-hewn frame. Inside are numbered pews with pointed-arch inserts, a rear balcony, original window shutters, kerosene lighting fixtures and wood stoves. It has never been electrified or centrally heated. Membership declined during the Depression, and the church closed in 1953 and sat unused until residents restored it in 1976. A 1984 hall stands beside it. The cemetery holds roughly 390 marked stones. The church is significant for its exceptionally intact vernacular architecture and for its role in the social life of the Scottish settlers of Dailey Ridge.","period_of_significance":"1853-1951","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Restored in 1976 after being closed from 1953; the church is again in use for weekly worship and the adjoining cemetery is still used for burials.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.198971-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/02000300.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321888","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Presbyterian_Church_of_Dailey_Ridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5453681"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/st-lawrence-county/first-presbyterian-church-of-dailey-ridge-02000300/"}
