Construction began in 1871 and the church was completed in 1883 to designs by architect A.J. Warner.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the church is an intact example of High Victorian Gothic Revival design by Rochester architect A.J. Warner and is representative of small-scale Presbyterian churches of its period. It is also the only known church built entirely of tufa, a rare bog limestone. It survives as an important local landmark.","narrative":"Built of rare bog limestone, or tufa, this Presbyterian church sits at George and William Streets in the hamlet of Mumford, Monroe County. The congregation formed in 1868-69 after the local Baptist church lost its pastor, and it resolved in 1870 to build a permanent home. Rochester architect A.J. Warner designed the building, and the Patterson Manufacturing Company of Warsaw constructed it. The cornerstone was laid on August 22, 1871, but funds arrived slowly, and the church was finished in 1883. Pews and stained glass windows were financed as gifts or memorials. The High Victorian Gothic design features a free-standing seventy-foot tower with a broached spire, lancet stained glass windows, and a slate roof. Inside, walnut pews and woodwork and plaster walls reflect small-scale Presbyterian church planning. The tufa, made of fossilized swamp vegetation, is considered unique among known churches, and its supply is believed to be exhausted. The church remains an important local landmark.","period_of_significance":"1871-1883","architect_builder":"Andrew Jackson Warner, architect","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Gothic","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a religious facility; a low entrance vestibule with an interior lift was added for accessibility.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.620118-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/02000299.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000299/0bbd19788d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000299/0bbd19788d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:FIRST_PRESBYTERIAN_CHURCH_OF_MUMFORD,_MONROE_COUNTY,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318822","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Presbyterian_Church_of_Mumford","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5453699"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/monroe-county/first-presbyterian-church-of-mumford-02000299/"}
