It has a three-story brick main mill, an attached dye house and a brick warehouse building.","why_significant":"The mill is significant in architecture as a good, intact example of an early 20th-century textile mill, designed by C.E. Blank. It is also significant in industry for its role in Canton's economy, at its peak employing about one-third of the area's population.","narrative":"Built between late 1923 and summer 1924 on a 36-acre tract between the Etowah River and Georgia Highway 5, this brick textile complex served as the second plant of Canton Cotton Mills. It includes a three-story heavy-timber main mill, an attached dye house and a warehouse building with eight bays. C.E. Blank, a New England architect and builder for Dressler Industries, designed it. Additions followed in 1930 and between 1947 and 1951, nearly doubling capacity. The mill began with 750 looms and 23,000 spindles and produced denim known for quality, then tent twill for the government during the 1940s. At its peak it employed about one-third of the area's population, and it closed in 1981. The property is recognized for its role in Canton's economy and as a typical, well-preserved early 20th-century mill. The buildings have since been converted into loft apartments. The associated mill village across the highway is excluded.","period_of_significance":"1923-1952","architect_builder":"Blank, C.E. - architect and builder","architectural_style":"OTHER: early 20th century industrial building","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Converted to loft apartments during a certified rehabilitation; the mill itself closed in 1981.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.801488-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/02000293.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000293/4fc73122e5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000293/4fc73122e5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jud McCranue","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Canton_Cotton_Mills_No._2,_Canton,_GA,_US.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jud McCranue</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Canton_Cotton_Mills_No._2,_Canton,_GA,_US.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207400","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134281825"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/cherokee-county/canton-cotton-mills-no-2-02000293/"}
