It is a rare surviving example of the modest Federal-style homes built by artisans, tradesmen and middle-class settlers in early 19th-century Lynchburg. Its four-bay form and original upper-level entrance over a full basement make it an unusual hybrid between a Federal mansion and a cottage.","narrative":"Built around 1817 at 911 Sixth Street in Lynchburg's College Hill neighborhood, this two-story brick house was designed and built by local builder William Phaup. It has four bays, brick laid in three-course American bond, a side-gable standing seam metal roof, interior end chimneys, a corbelled brick cornice and jack arches over the openings. The main entrance was originally on the upper level, reached by a raised porch that has since been removed. Inside, a hall-and-parlor plan survives with six fireplaces, random-width pine floors and plaster walls. The house is considered a rare survivor of the modest Federal-style dwellings built by artisans and middle-class settlers during Lynchburg's early growth, after the town annexed the surrounding area in 1814. It stands near Fifth Street, an early stage road lined with early taverns and other brick Federal houses. Neglect and some structural cracking are noted as threats to its otherwise high integrity.","period_of_significance":"1817-1951","architect_builder":"Phaup, William","architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Survives in fair condition with a high level of integrity; neglect is the primary threat, with missing mantels and cracks along the north wall. Current function is listed as work in progress.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.962796-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/35/6817/41681735/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/02000182.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000182/4da2504edc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000182/4da2504edc-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Phaup_House_Dec_08.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog (talk)</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Phaup_House_Dec_08.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681735","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Phaup_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8016847"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/lynchburg/phaup-william-house-02000182/"}
