It reflects the modest development of the areas between Federal Hill and Courthouse Hill during the town's rapid early growth. The rear lot also retains evidence of its earlier use as a brickyard.","narrative":"Standing at the corner of Jackson and Seventh streets in Lynchburg's College Hill neighborhood, this small frame house was built around 1849 on land once used as a brickyard by Christopher Lynch. Alexander Liggatt, a friend of Micajah Lynch and executor of his will, is credited with its construction. The one-story, three-bay dwelling has weatherboard siding, a metal gable roof, exterior-end chimneys and a central-passage plan that remains intact. Two frame garages from about 1922 sit beside it, and the sunken rear lot still shows traces of the brickyard. The house was listed for its architecture because few modest vernacular homes of the middle class survive from Lynchburg's period of rapid growth in the early and mid-1800s. It was home to a succession of middle-class residents and predates many neighboring buildings. Though largely unaltered, it has stood vacant for years, and some original interior features, including mantels, are missing.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1849-1951","architect_builder":"Alexander Liggatt","architectural_style":"Other: Vernacular","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The form describes the house as in good condition with a high level of integrity and very few alterations, though it has stood vacant for years and neglect is the main threat.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.891921-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/49/6817/41681749/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/02000180.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000180/23280b3b01-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000180/23280b3b01-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brickyard_House_Lynchburg_Nov_08.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog (talk)</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brickyard_House_Lynchburg_Nov_08.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681749","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynch%27s_Brickyard_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712761"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/lynchburg/lynchs-brickyard-house-02000180/"}
