Minor as the manor house of his 70-acre plantation.","why_significant":"The nomination argues that Rebel Hall is one of a handful of surviving antebellum houses in Orange and the only one in the Greek Revival style. It is noted for exceptionally well executed and preserved interior woodwork, making it one of the best expressions of the style in the county. It also gained its name from the Bull family's wartime hospitality to Confederate soldiers and generals.","narrative":"Rebel Hall is a Greek Revival brick house on a tree-shaded lot in the town of Orange, Virginia. Dr. James H. Minor, a surgeon and farmer, had it built in 1848-49 as the manor house of his 70-acre plantation. The solid brick walls, laid in American bond, enclose a central hall with two rooms on each floor and a raised basement. Inside, heart-pine floors, Doric pilasters, classical door and window surrounds and carved mantels survive in remarkable condition, and the living room mantel bears the date 1848. A rear wing dates to about 1900, and the original-style front porch was recreated in 1990. The house earned its name during the Civil War, when the Bull family sheltered injured soldiers after a train derailment and hosted Confederate officers, including Generals Lee and Jackson. It is considered one of the finest examples of Greek Revival design in Orange County.","period_of_significance":"1848-49","architect_builder":"Unknown; research could not identify the architect or master builder","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; restored from 1985 onward, with a recreated original front porch added in 1990.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.299883-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/6823/41682350/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/02000179.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000179/f6f7ff4284-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000179/f6f7ff4284-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Ser Amantio di Nicolao","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rebel_Hall,_Orange,_VA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ser Amantio di Nicolao</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rebel_Hall,_Orange,_VA.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"98001651","name":"Orange Commercial Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/orange-commercial-historic-district-98001651/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682350","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebel_Hall","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15272108"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/orange-county/rebel-hall-02000179/"}
