The barn was converted into a painting studio by George Inness.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is an excellent local example of a transitional Federal/Greek Revival dwelling and is tied to the development of Medfield. It was also the home and studio of landscape painter George Inness from 1860 to 1864, a productive period in which he completed important works such as Clearing Up.","narrative":"Located at 406 Main Street in Medfield Center, this property includes a ca. 1830 house and a mid-19th-century barn. The 2 1/2-story, five-bay house combines Federal features, such as a symmetrical facade and center entry, with Greek Revival details, including pedimented lintels and a recessed doorway with sidelights. A rear ell was probably added between 1849 and 1860. The property is best known as the home of landscape painter George Inness from 1860 to 1864. He converted the barn into a studio and probably added the large north-facing windows for steady, neutral light. Inside, traces of reddish paint remain on the plaster and lath. While living here, Inness painted works including Clearing Up, A Passing Shower and Road to the Farm, and he taught John A. S. Monks. The site is also linked to Medfield's growth. Archaeological study documents a Native American site on the lot and suggests further historic remains may survive.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1830-1944","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal/Greek Revival; barn: No Style","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Both buildings are in use; the house is a single dwelling and the barn is used as a garage.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:05.152737-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/4/7964/63796404/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/02000153.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000153/4a3027f4b9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000153/4a3027f4b9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Inness-Fitts_House,_Medfield_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Inness-Fitts_House,_Medfield_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63796404","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inness%E2%80%93Fitts_House_and_Studio","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6035760"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/inness-fitts-house-and-studio-barn-02000153/"}
