Most were built around 1895.","why_significant":"The district is argued to be an intact, representative example of a cohesive group of building types and styles typical of rural villages at the end of the nineteenth century. It records the rebuilding of the village center after a devastating fire in March 1895. After the fire, the commercial district was reoriented east-west along Main Street.","narrative":"Canaseraga's Four Corners district is a group of sixteen buildings at the center of a small village in Allegany County, New York. Most are two-story brick commercial buildings with apartments or offices upstairs, built mainly in the summer of 1895 after a fire on March 28 destroyed 25 stores, two hotels, a bank, a newspaper office, a furniture factory and 34 homes. Common features include brick pilasters, corbelled cornices, and stone lintels and sills. Two former hotels, the Kingston and the Glenmore, mark the center and western end. One hardware store retains its early twentieth-century counters, shelving and drawers. After the fire the commercial center shifted from Church Street to an east-west line along Main Street. The district was listed as an intact example of the commercial architecture that characterized rural villages at the end of the nineteenth century. The boundaries exclude altered buildings, parking lots and vacant lots beyond it.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Buildings are mixed in use: stores, apartments, a post office, and a restaurant.
