It is also tied to Cutchogue's settlement through its builder, Joshua Wells, son of an original Southold settler. It was moved twice, the second time in 1857, to its present site.","narrative":"This one-and-one-half-story, gambrel-roofed house at 525 New Suffolk Road in Cutchogue was built around 1680 by Joshua Wells, son of William Wells, one of the original settlers of Southold. Its timber frame is concealed but reputed to survive from that date. A thorough remodeling in 1815 gave it its present Federal character, including a five-bay façade, a tripartite entry with sidelights, three classically detailed dormers, paired chimneys, and richly carved fireplace surrounds in the parlors. The house was moved early in the nineteenth century and again in 1857, when Orrin Goldsmith had it hauled to its current site on a new brick foundation. It remains a single-family home, with a 1930s garage on the lot. The house was recorded by the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1937. Its importance rests on its link to Cutchogue's settlement, its surviving settlement-period construction, and its intact Federal-period woodwork.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1680 - 1857","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-family dwelling; the form notes a high degree of integrity of interior and exterior finishes from the 1815 alteration.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.842642-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/02000139.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000139/f69b467ded-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000139/f69b467ded-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Americasroof","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Joshua-wells.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Americasroof</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Joshua-wells.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322305","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joshua_Wells_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6290312"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/wells-joshua-house-02000139/"}
