At 78 feet it is the most prominent example of the style in Whittier. It is more ornamented than most local examples, with a tile-finished tower, a decorative frieze and quoins, and it retains a high degree of integrity apart from ground-floor alterations.","narrative":"Rising six stories above Greenleaf Avenue in downtown Whittier, this concrete hotel was completed in March 1930 and remains one of the tallest buildings on a street otherwise lined with one- and two-story structures. Local businessman Aubrey Wardman financed it, partly to create jobs during the Depression, and local structural engineer David S. Bushnell designed it. The building was named for Lou Henry Hoover, the First Lady who had lived in Whittier as a girl. Its Spanish Colonial Revival design includes clay tile roofing over the front, smooth stucco walls, large arched ground-floor openings, an octagonal tower with ceramic tile bands, a decorative frieze and plaster quoins. The ground floor was altered in the 1950s, but a 2000-01 rehabilitation uncovered and restored original transoms, grilles and cast concrete. The upper floors now provide senior housing. It was listed for being the city's most prominent and ornamented example of its architectural style.","period_of_significance":"1930","architect_builder":"Bushnell, David","architectural_style":"Spanish Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Rehabilitated in 2000-01; the upper floors were converted to senior citizen housing and the ground level was restored.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.9176-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/02000074.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000074/72d0421cda-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000074/72d0421cda-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Los Angeles","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hoover_Hotel,_Whittier.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hoover_Hotel,_Whittier.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123859216","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoover_Hotel","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5898802"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/los-angeles-county/hoover-hotel-02000074/"}
