It reflects the area's shift from an iron-mining economy to Adirondack and Chateaugay Lake tourism. It served as a hub for both mining and village life until service ended in 1950.","narrative":"Built in 1903, the Lyon Mountain Railroad Station is a long, low, one-story wooden building with a hipped roof, wide bracketed eaves, a slate-sided ventilation lantern and a projecting bay window for the ticket agent. Inside it held men's and women's waiting rooms, a ticket office, a baggage room and a freight room, and much of the original beadboard and trim survives. The Delaware and Hudson Railroad built it after taking over the local mining and rail operations. It handled ore-town traffic and also visitors bound for hotels around Upper Chateaugay Lake. Passenger service ended in 1950 and freight in 1957. Around 1962 the building became a post office and a tavern, uses that lasted until the early 1990s. A nonprofit group formed to preserve it acquired the property in 2000. The station is recognized for its transportation role, its link to the community's economic development, and its Queen Anne-influenced railroad design.","period_of_significance":"1903 - 1950","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian (Queen Anne variant)","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Vacated in the early 1990s after serving as a post office and tavern; function listed as vacant/work in progress, with a preservation group acquiring it in 2000 and restoring the lantern slate and roof in 2001.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:54.185524-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/02000005.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000005/b17ec625be-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000005/b17ec625be-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Russ Nelson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Railroad_Station,_Lyon_Mountain,_New_York.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Russ Nelson</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Railroad_Station,_Lyon_Mountain,_New_York.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316933","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyon_Mountain_station","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6709643"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/clinton-county/lyon-mountain-railroad-station-02000005/"}
