He is credited with several other fine brick houses in rural Charlotte County, and bricks for them were likely fired in kilns at Woodfork. It is argued eligible under Criterion C for the quality and integrity of its architecture.","narrative":"Woodfork is a two-story, double-pile, center-hall brick house built in 1829 on a rise between Charlotte Court House and Cullen in Virginia's Piedmont. Henry Anderson Watkins, a planter and master builder, built it on land from his father, Col. Joel Watkins, part of a 1,253-acre tract along Ward's Fork Creek. The front and west walls are laid in Flemish bond and the rear and east walls in American bond. Tuscan-columned porches, a patterned fanlight, a walnut-railed stair and Adamesque woodwork mark the Federal style. The surviving property is about 35 acres. It includes a historic frame barn, the remains of a brick kiln and a log hay barn, and two overgrown cemeteries, one for the Watkins family and one for enslaved people. The kiln likely supplied brick for other Watkins houses in the county. The house is valued for its design, materials, workmanship and intact rural setting.","period_of_significance":"1829","architect_builder":"Henry Anderson Watkins","architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Single dwelling in current use; the form says it retains a high degree of integrity and that rehabilitation is planned, including restoring the original window sash.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.776211-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/49/6800/41680049/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/01001509.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001509/b7f0fd5166-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001509/b7f0fd5166-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Woodfork_front.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Woodfork_front.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680049","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodfork","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713556"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/charlotte-county/woodfork-01001509/"}
