It shows two building campaigns, an 1849 Greek Revival original and High Victorian Gothic changes of 1888. It is also described as the most conspicuous reminder of East Genoa's nineteenth century rural heritage and the visual anchor of the crossroads.","narrative":"This small country church stands at the crossroads of Tupper Road, East Genoa Road and Route 34 in East Genoa, Cayuga County. Built in 1849 for a Methodist Episcopal congregation formed in 1837, it was designed and constructed by local carpenter-builder Jeremiah Snyder, who drew on published builder's guides. The hewn-timber frame, clad in pine clapboard on a limestone rubble foundation, shows restrained Greek Revival massing and a wide frieze. In 1888 the congregation, with limited funds, altered the entrance and windows, adding a pointed-arch doorway and paired lancet windows with colored glass, and reworked the interior with Victorian moldings and beaded board. The congregation declined in the twentieth century, and the church closed temporarily in 1939. From the 1940s it became a community center. Although pews and furnishings were lost in the late 1990s, the building retains much of its character and rural setting, which is why it was listed for its architecture.","period_of_significance":"1849-1888","architect_builder":"Snyder, Jeremiah: carpenter-builder","architectural_style":"Mid-Nineteenth Century: Greek Revival; Late Victorian: Gothic","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Since the 1940s the building has served as a community center and meeting hall; most pews and liturgical furnishings were removed and sold in the late 1990s.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.928252-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/01001500.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001500/ca705102e2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001500/ca705102e2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Doncram","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:East_Genoa_Methodist_Episcopal_Church.jpeg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doncram</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:East_Genoa_Methodist_Episcopal_Church.jpeg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316701","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Genoa_Methodist_Episcopal_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5328415"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/cayuga-county/east-genoa-methodist-episcopal-church-01001500/"}
