It also illustrates how the railroad drove Lacona's commerce and growth (Criterion A), and it was at the center of a dispute that helped fix the boundary between Lacona and Sandy Creek.","narrative":"Built in 1891 beside the tracks in the Village of Lacona, this one-story wooden railroad station replaced an earlier depot of 1872 on the same site. It has a rectangular plan, board-and-batten siding, deep overhanging eaves with curved wood brackets, and a three-sided telegraph bay facing the tracks. Inside, the passenger waiting room, stationmaster's office and freight room survive with beaded board finishes. Garage doors added on the Park Avenue side and an automotive pit in the freight room reflect later use, but much of the original fabric remains. The station was the transportation hub of the town until passenger service ended in the mid-1960s. Local industries such as the Blount Lumber Company and the Corse Press shipped goods from it, and farmers used it to reach distant markets. A dispute over whether the station belonged in Lacona or Sandy Creek was settled by the county board, which set the boundary at Academy Street.","period_of_significance":"1891-1950","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant; the building was most recently used for automotive purposes, and its windows are boarded. The west elevation was altered with garage doors, though remnants of the original window crowns remain.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.160859-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/01001499.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001499/febf53ea3b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001499/febf53ea3b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JaPaGaIII","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lacona_depot.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">JaPaGaIII</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lacona_depot.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320839","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lacona_station_(New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6468792"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/oswego-county/lacona-railroad-station-and-depot-01001499/"}
