It includes a circa 1835 frame grist mill, a dam and penstock from around 1900, and the ruins of an 1859 tannery.","why_significant":"The complex is argued to be significant under Criterion A for its link to the settlement and early growth of northern Cayuga County, and as the earliest water-powered industrial site in Sterling Center. Under Criterion C, the mill is a representative example of heavy timber-frame mill construction with Greek Revival detailing and surviving circa 1835 mechanical parts.","narrative":"Beside Sterling Creek in the hamlet of Sterling Center, this one-acre site holds a two-and-one-half-story timber-frame grist mill built around 1835, along with a dam, a riveted metal penstock added about 1900, and the foundation ruins of an 1859 tannery. The mill probably replaced an 1813 mill built for Edwin Clark. It has a stone foundation, clapboard siding, and Greek Revival touches such as a wide frieze band and cornice returns. Inside, gears and pulleys from the 1830s survive, and the turbine is reported to lie buried in silt. The complex was listed for its role in the settlement and agricultural economy of northern Cayuga County, where the creek's waterpower supported milling, sawing, and tanning. It also represents heavy timber mill construction, once common in rural New York. The building is vacant and deteriorating, and runoff erosion threatens it. The tannery ruins were not counted as contributing because little is known about them.","period_of_significance":"circa 1813- circa 1900","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Mid-nineteenth century: Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Current function listed as vacant; the mill is in disrepair after extended neglect and is not in operating order. The center of the dam is breached.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.374655-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/01001498.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001498/b13bcec97a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001498/b13bcec97a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Doncram","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sterling_Grist_Mill_Complex_02_31_45_098000.jpeg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doncram</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sterling_Grist_Mill_Complex_02_31_45_098000.jpeg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316737","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sterling_Grist_Mill_Complex","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7611409"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/cayuga-county/sterling-grist-mill-complex-01001498/"}
