Together they show the development of a small central New York village shaped by the turnpike, Skaneateles Creek mills and the Erie Canal. It includes notable Federal, Italianate and Romanesque Revival buildings and a 1930 Colonial Revival school.","narrative":"Elbridge Village Historic District covers roughly sixty acres along Main Street in the village of Elbridge, Onondaga County, New York, about twenty miles west of Syracuse. The street follows the route of the Genesee Turnpike, completed in the early nineteenth century, and the village grew with help from Skaneateles Creek's mills and the nearby Erie Canal. Most of the district's resources are wood frame houses from the middle and later nineteenth century, joined by brick commercial buildings, churches and schools. Federal buildings such as the former Congregational Church form the oldest layer, followed by Greek Revival, Italianate and Queen Anne houses. The Baptist Church of 1858, attributed to Syracuse architect Horatio Nelson White, is a Romanesque Revival landmark. The Colonial Revival Elbridge Elementary School, finished in 1930, was the last contributing building added. Of the properties counted, only a handful are modern or heavily altered, so the street still reads as a cohesive small-village streetscape.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Horatio Nelson White (Baptist Church, 1858); Charles Park, architect, and H.
