It was moved in 1981 to its present site at Los Carneros County Park.","why_significant":"The depot is tied to the development of transportation, commerce and communications in Goleta and the region during the completion of Southern Pacific's Coast Line. It is Goleta's oldest surviving commercial building and the oldest remaining Coast Line building in Santa Barbara County. It is also the only surviving Santa Barbara County example of the Combination Station No. 22 standard-design depot.","narrative":"Goleta Depot is a wood-frame railroad station built in 1901 by the Southern Pacific Railroad as the Coast Line neared completion between San Francisco and Los Angeles. It follows the railroad's Combination Station No. 22 standard plan, with a passenger waiting room, office, baggage room and freight room on the lower levels and an agent's apartment above. Stick-style features include wide bracketed eaves, shingled gables, redwood gutters and a two-story window bay. The depot handled passengers, freight and express shipments, moving local produce and livestock out and building supplies in until it ceased railroad service in 1973. It was moved in 1981 to Los Carneros County Park, restored, and reopened in 1983. Of eight such depots built in Santa Barbara County, it is the only survivor. It is also Goleta's oldest surviving commercial building and the oldest remaining Coast Line structure in the county. It now serves as a railroad museum.","period_of_significance":"1901-1951","architect_builder":"Southern Pacific Railroad","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Stick","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Restored and reopened in 1983; it now houses the South Coast Railroad Museum.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:28.2362-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/01001457.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001457/abddac7dd1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001457/abddac7dd1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.5","author":"Gcoombs at en.wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Goleta_Depot.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Gcoombs at en.wikipedia</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.5\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.5</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Goleta_Depot.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861589","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goleta_Depot","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5580528"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/santa-barbara-county/goleta-depot-01001457/"}
