The nominated property also includes nearly a mile of the former track right-of-way.","why_significant":"The station is argued to be architecturally significant as a well-preserved early twentieth century passenger station with a Tudor Revival character and largely intact original interior and exterior fabric. It also has significance in transportation history, as the focal point of Port Ben's commerce and travel. The surviving right-of-way, still under the same ownership, adds to its significance.","narrative":"Port Ben's former Ontario & Western Railroad passenger station sits on Tow Path Road in Wawarsing, Ulster County. The O&W built it in 1912, and it served the hamlet as the center of local commerce and transportation. The one-story wood-frame building has a slate-shingled gabled roof, stucco over metal lath divided by half-timbering, and a low brick knee wall. Inside are a waiting room, ticket office and a raised freight area. Original plaster, varnished wainscoting, multi-light sash, waiting benches, knob-and-tube wiring and a coal bin with coal still survive. The design follows a standard plan for rural and resort stations, with a Tudor Revival character given by half-timbering, decorative rafter ends and a timber-braced waiting shed. Passenger service ended in 1953, the line was abandoned, and the tracks were removed in the late 1950s. The listing recognizes the station as an intact example of its type, together with about a mile of surviving right-of-way that shows the line's path through the hamlet.","period_of_significance":"1912-ca.1958","architect_builder":"Built by the O&W (Ontario & Western Railroad) in 1912","architectural_style":"Late 19th and Early 20th Century Revivals/Tudor Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as vacant; the tracks were removed in the late 1950s, and the station retains its original fabric and integrity.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.159588-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/01001448.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001448/50fa3828c7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001448/50fa3828c7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:O%26W_Railroad_Station_at_Port_Ben,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:O%26W_Railroad_Station_at_Port_Ben,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322689","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Ben_station","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7073195"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ulster-county/o-and-w-railroad-station-at-port-ben-01001448/"}
