A rear wing was added around 1855.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a rare and substantially intact example of Federal-period timber-frame vernacular architecture in Schoharie. It is the only survivor of four taverns established by 1800 and shows later Greek Revival changes. It has also served as a student dormitory and, since 1913, as a meeting hall and local history museum.","narrative":"Lasell Hall is a 2 1/2-story timber-framed building on Main Street in the village of Schoharie, built in 1795 as the Fountain Town Tavern and the innkeeper's residence. Local craftsmen working for Johannes Lawyer used hewn timbers with mortise-and-tenon joinery, brick nogging and finely made Federal moldings. A large cooking hearth and a second-floor sleeping room that doubled as a ballroom reflect its tavern use. It is the only survivor of four inns that existed in Schoharie by 1800, in a village where fires destroyed many early frame buildings. The Lasell family later owned it, and in 1855 a rear wing was added so it could house students of Schoharie Academy. It later became a boardinghouse and stood vacant by about 1900. The Daughters of the American Revolution received it in 1913, and the chapter still uses it as a meeting hall and museum of local history.","period_of_significance":"1795-1950","architect_builder":"Built by local craftsmen employed by Johannes Lawyer","architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Used by the Schoharie Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, as a meeting hall and museum of local history; the upper story of the rear wing is vacant and undergoing rehabilitation.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.844278-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/01001444.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001444/26ad28b1ee-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001444/26ad28b1ee-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lasell_Hall_Feb_09.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lasell_Hall_Feb_09.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100003624","name":"Schoharie Village Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/schoharie-village-historic-district-100003624/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321749","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lasell_Hall","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6492934"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/schoharie-county/lasell-hall-01001444/"}
