It is attributed to architect Richard M. Upjohn, with the 1901 addition attributed to Hobart Upjohn. It retains a high degree of integrity inside and out.","narrative":"Set on a 3.6-acre rise beside Saw Mill River Road in Greenburgh, this rock-faced stone church began in 1883 as the Worthington Memorial Chapel. Sara Newton Worthington commissioned it as a chapel and crypt for her late husband, the pump manufacturer and engineer Henry R. Worthington, and three of their children. Tradition points to an Upjohn as designer, and the form attributes it to Richard M. Upjohn. The cruciform building has corner buttresses, pointed-arch openings, a rose window and a three-story bell tower. Inside are an open-truss wooden ceiling and stained glass attributed to John LaFarge. A 1901 addition, attributed to Hobart Upjohn, added a choir room and a second crypt. The chapel became a consecrated mission church in 1896 and a parish church in 1931. It was listed for its architecture, as a distinctive example of eclectic Victorian church design that keeps a high degree of integrity. Later additions date from 1953 and 1990.","period_of_significance":"1883-1901","architect_builder":"Upjohn, Richard Michell (attributed); Upjohn, Hobart (addition) (attributed)","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Gothic Revival (eclectic Victorian)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as an active parish church with religious and crypt functions; a 1990 addition does not contribute to its significance.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.859896-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/01001439.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001439/2574120976-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001439/2574120976-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"DK Big Fish","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Church_of_St._Joseph_of_Arimathea,_Oct_2012.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">DK Big Fish</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Church_of_St._Joseph_of_Arimathea,_Oct_2012.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322987","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_St._Joseph_of_Arimathea","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5117268"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/church-of-st-joseph-of-arimathea-01001439/"}
