Bennett.","why_significant":"The house is a distinctive, intact Victorian residence tied to one of Monticello's prominent families. Its restrained Italianate exterior contrasts with a lavishly decorated interior that keeps nearly all of its original finishes. It also shows how the neighborhood near Broadway developed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.","narrative":"Built in 1880 at 11 Hamilton Avenue in Monticello, this L-shaped, cross-gabled frame house was the first residence on the south side of the street. George E. Bennett, a bank president and grandson of village founder John P. Jones, had it built. The exterior is a modest Italianate design with some Stick style touches, including a sawn-post porch and a two-story bay window. Vinyl siding now covers the original clapboard. Inside, the house is far more ornate, with chestnut doors, stairs and trim, black Italian marble mantels set with Dutch tiles, parquet floors and built-in cabinets. Most original finishes survive. After Bennett died in 1917, his daughters Edith and Mildred lived there for over seventy-five years, and the house became a center of local social and cultural life. Its architect is unknown. The house was listed for its architecture, its social history, and its exceptional interior integrity. Today it houses offices for a counseling organization.","period_of_significance":"1880","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian (Italianate with some Stick style decoration)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as administrative offices (health care function) for a drug and alcohol abuse council; exterior largely unaltered since about 1930 apart from vinyl siding and shutters.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.246448-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/01001400.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001400/a40ac73660-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001400/a40ac73660-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Vonsky87","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bennett_Family_House_Monticello_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Vonsky87</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bennett_Family_House_Monticello_NY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100004915","name":"Broadway Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/broadway-historic-district-100004915/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322337","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bennett_Family_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4889688"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/sullivan-county/bennett-family-house-01001400/"}
