M. It is now used as the Hobart Historical Center.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is significant in social history and architecture as a representative, intact example of a Masonic lodge in Delaware County and a distinctive example of Stick style design. It was built for one of the county's earliest lodges, chartered in 1796. The applied wooden Masonic tool ornamentation in the front gable is noted as especially noteworthy.","narrative":"Built in 1889 at 6 Cornell Avenue in Hobart, this two-and-one-half-story wood-frame hall was erected for St. Andrew's Lodge, F. & A. M., a Masonic body first chartered in 1796 and among the earliest in Delaware County. The lodge had earlier met in private homes, a school and rented rooms before buying land in 1887 and financing its own building through member loans and a Masonic Fair. The hall cost $2,132.29 and was most likely built by members. Its Stick style design includes a steep cross-gabled roof, decorative vergeboards and gables ornamented with applied wooden hammer, ruler, square, trowel and anchor symbols. Inside, a large second-floor lodge room keeps original oak furniture, carved Masonic symbols on the moldings and grain-painted doors. The ground floor was rented out and has been altered, but the building otherwise retains strong integrity. It is valued as an intact example of a rural Masonic lodge and of Stick style design.","period_of_significance":"1889","architect_builder":"unknown (most likely built by lodge members)","architectural_style":"Stick Style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Now used as the Hobart Historical Center (library/education use); the first floor has non-historic alterations but the building retains an outstanding level of integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.662777-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/01001399.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317229","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobart_Masonic_Hall","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5874728"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/delaware-county/hobart-masonic-hall-01001399/"}
