A 1956 church office and community hall adjoins it.","why_significant":"The church is significant under Criterion C as a distinguished example of mid-nineteenth century Gothic Revival church architecture shaped by the ecclesiology movement. It has pointed arches, a steeply pitched nave roof, a buttressed central tower and a hammer-beam truss system. It remains largely intact and is a recognizable visual landmark in Kingston.","narrative":"Second Reformed Dutch Church occupies a corner site at Fair and Pearl Streets in Kingston, New York. Built in 1850 to designs by New York architect Thomas Thomas, Jr., it is a limestone meetinghouse with a narrow, high nave of six bays over a raised basement. A buttressed central tower holds the main entrance beneath a large Gothic arched window. A fifty-foot wood spire originally topped the tower but was toppled by a storm in 1854 and never rebuilt. Inside, wood pews, an organ screen and finely crafted wood trusses survive. The congregation formed in 1849 when fifty-two families split from the First Reformed Dutch Church. The building was dedicated in 1852. It was listed for its architecture, as a well-preserved regional example of Gothic Revival design influenced by the ecclesiology movement and by architects such as Richard Upjohn. A 1956 brick hall is linked to it discreetly.","period_of_significance":"1850","architect_builder":"Thomas, Thomas, Jr.","architectural_style":"Mid 19th Century/Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a religious facility; a non-contributing 1956 hall is joined to the church basement by a low hyphen.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.767484-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/01001393.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001393/00d7895356-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001393/00d7895356-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Jack Boucher","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Second_Reformed_Dutch_Church,_209_Fair_Street,_Kingston_(Ulster_County,_New_York).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jack Boucher</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Second_Reformed_Dutch_Church,_209_Fair_Street,_Kingston_(Ulster_County,_New_York).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322725","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Reformed_Dutch_Church_of_Kingston","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7443495"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ulster-county/second-reformed-dutch-church-of-kingston-01001393/"}
