A mid-19th-century storage barn stands behind it.","why_significant":"The building is an intact local example of mid-19th-century combined residential and industrial architecture, and it served as both a manufacturing site and a residence. It is the last intact industrial building from Oak Hill's once-thriving manufacturing core. It keeps a high degree of architectural integrity, including Greek Revival finishes.","narrative":"Built around 1850 beside Squirmer Valley Creek in the hamlet of Oak Hill, this timber frame building combined a home with a small manufacturing space. It has five bays across and three deep, clapboard siding, a low hipped roof and six-over-six windows. A three-story porch spans the south facade, and the south wall rests directly on the creek's stone banks. Inside, the upper floors follow a center-hall, single-pile plan with Greek Revival finishes. A heavy-timber storage barn of the same era stands behind it. Oak Hill grew into an industrial center in the 19th century, with iron foundries and makers of small metal goods. The house was built next to the S. B. Smith Iron Works, and the foundries and other buildings of that complex have since disappeared. It is the last intact industrial building from that core. Its austere design reflects its practical origins, and it was listed for its architecture and its link to the hamlet's industrial past.","period_of_significance":"ca.1850","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century / Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently in use as a single dwelling; the form reports a high degree of architectural integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:54.075964-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/01001390.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001390/557399b57c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001390/557399b57c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Kenneth C.Zirkel","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mrs._Osburn_House_Durham_NY-2.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Kenneth C.Zirkel</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mrs._Osburn_House_Durham_NY-2.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100001586","name":"Oak Hill Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/oak-hill-historic-district-100001586/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318019","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mrs._Osburn_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6929838"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/greene-county/osburn-mrs-house-01001390/"}
