It also preserves a rare settlement-era core, typical of early and mid eighteenth-century dwellings, along with Greek Revival and Victorian alterations that record changing tastes.","narrative":"Set on the highest point in the hamlet of Slate Hill, in the town of Wawayanda, Orange County, this wood-clapboard house at 633 Ridgebury Road grew in stages over more than a century. Its earliest part, a timber-framed section on a stone foundation at the southeast corner, dates to the mid-eighteenth-century settlement period. In the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century the house was enlarged to a five-bay, center-hall plan with a fine Federal entry and a reeded archway in the hall. Greek Revival moldings and plaster cornices followed, and late in the nineteenth century a central gable, Stick Style porch and oriel window were added. The house was listed for its architecture. It represents regional Federal style residential building, and its settlement-era core is a rare survival in Orange County. The intact floor plan, doors, hardware and trim, and the preserved rural setting, give it a high degree of integrity.","period_of_significance":"ca.1750-ca.1880","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal; Late Victorian/Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed as a single dwelling in current domestic use, with one noncontributing modern greenhouse on the 1.1-acre lot.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.935666-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/01001383.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001383/ce1ecf0d33-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001383/ce1ecf0d33-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dunning_House,_Wawayanda,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dunning_House,_Wawayanda,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320632","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5315600"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/dunning-house-01001383/"}
