Both churches show the style's rectangular gable massing, heavy moldings, pilasters, full entablatures and paneled double doors. Together they illustrate the community's mid-nineteenth century religious and architectural development.","narrative":"Two small wooden churches stand side by side on Church Street in Jewett, Greene County, New York. Both were built in 1848 in the Greek Revival style. The Presbyterian church is a two-story timber frame building with a pedimented front, broad pilasters, paired paneled entrance doors and a belfry topped by an octagonal spire. Next to it, the former Methodist Episcopal church is a single-story frame building with corner pilasters, a molded cornice and tall twelve-over-twelve windows. The Presbyterian society gave the site to the Methodist congregation, and the Methodist building later became the Presbyterian congregation's hall. The complex was listed because the two buildings are well-preserved, closely matched examples of Greek Revival church design in a rural setting. Their scale, simplicity and craftsmanship, along with shared setting and history, make them the community's most significant visual and architectural landmarks. Later changes, such as new foundations and dropped ceilings, are described as reversible.","period_of_significance":"1848","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Both buildings remain largely intact. The Presbyterian church is still used for worship, and the former Methodist church serves as the Presbyterian congregation's hall.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.335129-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/01001382.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001382/bb8e8ed99a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001382/bb8e8ed99a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"RobertDrake2015","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jewett_Presbyterian_Church_Complex.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">RobertDrake2015</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jewett_Presbyterian_Church_Complex.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317984","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewett_Presbyterian_Church_Complex","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6189694"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/greene-county/jewett-presbyterian-church-complex-01001382/"}
