Howard Harlan built it in 1872 with a hall on the second floor and a livery stable below.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the hall meets Criterion A as a locally significant example of the opera houses that rural and small communities demanded in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was a gathering place for all levels of community life and kept its original appearance and integrity. It is one of the oldest and largest buildings in downtown Marshall.","narrative":"Harlan Hall is a brick opera house on the southeast corner of the Courthouse Square in Marshall, Illinois. Howard Harlan built it in 1872 on a lot he bought in 1861. The building measures about 40 by 125 feet. The second floor held a large auditorium with a three-sided balcony and no interior pillars, supported by heavy timber trusses, while the ground floor served as a drive-in livery stable. Its Italianate styling, with arched windows and heavy eave brackets, matched the dominant style of downtown Marshall. Later uses included hog house manufacturing around 1920 and a Moose Lodge from the mid-1950s, which removed the stage and added kitchens. The footprint and most original features remain, including pressed tin ceilings, original windows and sashes, and the balcony. The hall was listed for its role in the cultural and entertainment life of a small Illinois community, where it hosted events for people at all levels of society. Restoration is planned.","period_of_significance":"1872-1904","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Listed function is vacant/work in progress.
