A brick ell was added at about the time of original construction.","why_significant":"The building is a well-preserved example of a mid-19th-century Massachusetts town hall that combined Italianate and French Second Empire design. Its multipurpose plan placed a meeting hall and town offices alongside rental storefronts, a common way for towns to offset costs. The asymmetrical design responded to a difficult corner lot and to criticism of the previous town house on the site.","narrative":"Standing at the corner of Main and Summer streets in North Brookfield's village center, this wooden town hall rises three and a half stories under a concave mansard roof. A sixty-foot corner tower with an octagonal belfry and lantern dominates the streetscape, and the bell inside is marked 1863. The design blends Italianate and French Second Empire elements, including projecting pavilions, quoins, bracketed window hoods and ornamented dormers. Its asymmetry came from a shallow, irregular corner lot and from a wish to avoid the awkward Summer Street front of the earlier town house on the site. Inside are a grand stairhall, a second-floor meeting hall with balcony and stage, and pressed metal ceilings in the former stores. Storefronts along Main Street once provided rental income, a practice shared by several other Worcester County towns. Today the building still serves as town hall and police station, though the roof material and some trim, doors and windows have changed.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Italianate and Second Empire","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still used as town hall and police station.
