It began as a log hall-parlor house built c. 1885 by Hodge Raburn and was enlarged in 1913 and 1920.","why_significant":"The house is significant in architecture as an excellent, well-documented example of a vernacular building altered over time to suit changing family needs, and it includes two types of log notching that are rare among surveyed Georgia resources. It is also significant in medicine because two physicians treated patients there, including Dr. William J. Casteel, who practiced there until his death in 1939.","narrative":"Four miles north of Blairsville, in Union County, Georgia, a white weatherboard farmhouse conceals a log house built around 1885 by Hodge Raburn. Half-dovetail notched logs survive beneath the siding of the original hall-parlor section. A single-pen log ell with saddle notching was added between about 1885 and 1913, followed by a wood-framed hall-parlor addition in 1913 built by carpenter Andy Colwell, and an enclosed garage in 1920. Together the sections read as one house under a metal roof. The property is valued as a clear example of a vernacular home expanded as family needs changed, and for its rare pairing of two log notching types. It also reflects early rural medicine. Dr. William J. Casteel, among the first licensed physicians serving this northern part of the county, treated patients in the log rooms and lived in the 1913 section. The 1913 addition has three front doors to accommodate his practice. He practiced there until his death in 1939.","period_of_significance":"c.1885-1939","architect_builder":"Hodge Raburn; Andy Colwell","architectural_style":"Other: Hall-Parlor; Other: Single-Pen","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-dwelling residence; the form lists current function as domestic.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.583614-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/01001181.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001181/b786afc43d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001181/b786afc43d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Gwringle","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Raburn-Casteel_House,_Union_County,_GA,_1885.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Gwringle</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Raburn-Casteel_House,_Union_County,_GA,_1885.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209792","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raburn-Casteel_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q29093158"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/union-county/raburn-casteel-house-01001181/"}
