It was built by planter Robert Taylor for his son Archibald.","why_significant":"The house is locally significant under Criterion C as a largely intact example of a mid-nineteenth century plantation house with late Federal and Greek Revival transitional features. It is nearly identical to the Richard P. Taylor House nearby and stands out from comparable Granville County houses for its side-hall plan, window surrounds and roof pediment.","narrative":"Near Oxford in Granville County, North Carolina, this two-story frame house was built about 1840 by planter Robert Taylor for his son Archibald. It faces west on a full-height brick basement and has a gable roof, a side-hall plan and a one-story rear ell. Its details mix late Federal and Greek Revival styles: scalloped stair ends, slender mantel columns, corner blocks, double doors and large ten-over-fifteen and ten-over-ten windows. A pedimented gable with a lunette-topped window faces south. The house is nearly identical to the Richard P. Taylor House about a mile north, built for Archibald's half-brother, though Archibald's is two bays wide rather than three. Archibald and his wife lived here until about 1855, then moved to Franklin County. The ten-acre property also holds ten twentieth-century farm outbuildings, which do not contribute to its significance. The house was rehabilitated in 2000-2001, with original windows reinstalled and the front porch replicated.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1840","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Federal; Greek Revival (late Federal and transitional Greek Revival)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The house was undergoing rehabilitation in 2000-2001, including a new rear wing. The outbuildings are described as in good condition and in use for farm storage and animal housing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:52.713744-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/53/7178/47717853/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/01001132.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717853","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archibald_Taylor_Plantation_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18711673"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/granville-county/taylor-archibald-plantation-house-01001132/"}
