(The listing metadata places it in Northampton County, but the form describes Granville County.)","why_significant":"The form presents Edgewood as representative of both the plantation-era estates and the bright leaf tobacco farms that followed them in Granville County. The house is a fine local example of Greek Revival, one of few surviving double-pile two-story houses in the county, and has rare Italianate roof brackets. Its unusually large set of plantation and bright leaf outbuildings also supports its significance.","narrative":"Edgewood is a mid-nineteenth-century plantation house and farm near Grassy Creek in Granville County, North Carolina. Samuel and Martha Venable Morton built the two-story, weatherboarded dwelling after their 1858 marriage, on land given by Martha's father. It is a double-pile, center-hall house with a low hipped roof, crossetted window and door surrounds, and an intact interior with simple pilastered mantels, fluted cornerblock door surrounds and an unusual stair with scalloped ends. Its eave brackets are a rare local example of Italianate detail from the plantation era. About a dozen outbuildings survive, including log stables, a brooder house, an ice house and a tenant house, along with frame corn cribs, chicken houses and a hay barn, all reflecting the shift to bright leaf tobacco farming after the Civil War. The Winston family acquired the farm in 1917 and grew tobacco there into the 1950s. The nominated area covers about 8 acres, with a significance period of about 1858 to 1937.","period_of_significance":"circa 1858 to 1937","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Greek Revival; Italianate","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Described as handsomely finished, intact and in good condition; the dwelling remains in the family that acquired it in 1917 and the property is still a residence and farm.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:52.707398-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/0/7179/47717900/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/88000421.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001114/ac1ccc7a0a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001114/ac1ccc7a0a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Frank Womble","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edgewood_Holoman-Outland_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Frank Womble</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edgewood_Holoman-Outland_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":null,"wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holoman-Outland_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19462376"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/northampton-county/edgewood-01001114/"}
