Ellington & Royster were the contractors.","why_significant":"The house is the surviving landmark of the first agricultural experiment station in North Carolina and the second in the nation, which conducted research for the state's farmers from 1886 to 1926. It is also a well-preserved example of eclectic Victorian design, intended as a model farmhouse for farmers to imitate.","narrative":"Built in 1886 on the western edge of Raleigh, this two-story frame house served as the superintendent's residence and office for the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station. The station tested crops such as tobacco, cotton, rice and peas, and studied fertilizers, soils, insect control and poultry. The state's station was the second in the United States. Its farmland, laboratory and other buildings are gone, leaving the cottage as the only reminder of the institution. The house was meant to be a model farmhouse that a well-to-do farmer could imitate. It combines Gothic Revival, Italianate and Queen Anne elements, with sawnwork bargeboards, a wraparound piazza and an ornate staircase. Contractors Ellington & Royster built it. The station moved in the mid-1920s, and the house has since been a private residence with only minor changes. Its original floor plan and much of its finish remain, and it was recognized for its role in agricultural research and for its architecture.","period_of_significance":"1886-1926","architect_builder":"Ellington & Royster, contractors","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Gothic, Italianate, Queen Anne","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-family dwelling; exterior and interior are described as nearly unaltered, and the property has no outbuildings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:53.04438-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/43/7224/47722443/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/01001112.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001112/a63240cc5a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001112/a63240cc5a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Nicholas Oren Rawlings","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NC_Agricultural_Experiment_Station_Cottage.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nicholas Oren Rawlings</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NC_Agricultural_Experiment_Station_Cottage.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"03001300","name":"West Raleigh Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/west-raleigh-historic-district-03001300/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722443","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Carolina_Agricultural_Experiment_Station_Cottage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20713047"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/wake-county/north-carolina-agricultural-experiment-station-cottage-01001112/"}
