Hoyt on about two acres along US 19/23 near Candler, Buncombe County, North Carolina. It is now used as a bed-and-breakfast inn.","why_significant":"The nomination argues Engadine is an excellent local example of an elaborate Queen Anne dwelling in western Buncombe County and one of only a few fully realized Queen Anne houses in the rural parts of the county outside Asheville. It also predates well-known Asheville Queen Anne houses and retains its architectural integrity and a finely crafted interior.","narrative":"Engadine is a large Queen Anne style house built in 1885 for Captain John Keais Hoyt, a Confederate Army veteran who later worked in New York and moved his family to Buncombe County in 1883. The wood-frame house has a truncated hip roof with six dormers, deep inset two-tier porches, a corner turret, a cantilevered balcony and alternating plain and scalloped shingles on the second story. Inside, pine, walnut, oak, chestnut and cherry woodwork, pocket doors, mantels and Eastlake hardware survive. The house originally had electricity from a generator, central heating and running water. Hoyt also ran a vineyard and winery on the grounds until a 1910 state law ended wine production. The property is recognized for its architecture. It is a rare, fully developed Queen Anne residence in the rural part of the county, and it predates better-known examples in Asheville. The architect is undocumented, though Hoyt's artistic skill suggests he helped shape the design. Today it operates as an inn.","period_of_significance":"1885","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a bed-and-breakfast inn, which opened in 1994 after renovation; the interior has been carefully preserved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:54.507591-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/49/7191/47719149/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/01001027.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001027/ed419f5cf4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01001027/ed419f5cf4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"rossograph","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Engadine_Bed_and_Breakfast.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">rossograph</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Engadine_Bed_and_Breakfast.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719149","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engadine_(Candler,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18149893"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/buncombe-county/engadine-01001027/"}
