It was built in 1831-33 by James Shaw and later became a Masonic temple.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is an outstanding, intact example of early 19th-century Federal-style design in western New York and a rare surviving hotel from the Great Genesee Road migration era. It is the largest of several Federal-period cut-stone buildings nearby. Its center entrance, Palladian facade windows and decorative woodwork are singled out, and it remains a prominent landmark in the village's commercial district.","narrative":"Built between 1831 and 1833 from locally quarried cut stone, this Federal-style hotel sits at a bend in the old Genesee Road in the center of Caledonia, New York. James Shaw built it on land near his farm, and carpenter John Butterick completed the woodwork, including a third-floor ballroom with a celebrated spring floor. The five-bay facade features two Palladian windows and an elegant center entrance with fluted pilasters and a fan window. A bracketed gable roof replaced the original stepped gables in the late nineteenth century. The hotel served stagecoach traffic between Albany and Buffalo and passed through many proprietors before closing in 1903. Eunice Lodge of Masons bought it in 1908 and dedicated the temple in 1909. Shops and the post office occupied the ground floor. It was listed as a rare, intact Federal-style hotel and a village landmark, with much original staircase, trim and mantel detail surviving inside.","period_of_significance":"1831-1950","architect_builder":"John Butterick (carpenter); built by James Shaw","architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still standing and in use as a Masonic meeting hall (Eunice Lodge) with commercial spaces on the first floor.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.556682-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/01000997.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000997/5ec008cd4f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000997/5ec008cd4f-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Caledonia_House_Hotel_Aug_10.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog (talk)</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Caledonia_House_Hotel_Aug_10.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318620","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caledonia_House_Hotel","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5019385"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/livingston-county/caledonia-house-hotel-01000997/"}
