The rear section dates to before 1820 and the main block was completed in 1830 for the Richardson family.","why_significant":"The property is significant locally as the home of six generations of the Richardson/Bowles family, several of whom were notable physicians, legislators and public officials. It is also significant for its Federal architecture and unusually varied carved, grained and painted interior woodwork.","narrative":"Straddling the Fluvanna-Goochland county line, The Oaks is a brick farmhouse begun in the early 19th century and completed in 1830 for the Richardson family. A pre-1820 rear ell was raised and joined to a two-story, center-passage front block, laid in Flemish bond on the facade. Its most striking feature is the interior woodwork, with wide carved and incised chair rails, mantels with sunbursts and pilasters, and doors and panels grained to resemble mahogany and maple. A brick kitchen, once a schoolroom, a smokehouse, an icehouse, a barn and a fenced family cemetery with some fifty-six graves complete the property. The house passed through six generations of the Richardson/Bowles family. Members included Dr. Richard C. Bowles, a Confederate surgeon who later practiced from the house and helped found a rural public high school, and George A. Bowles, a state legislator who influenced Virginia's highway system and later served as insurance commissioner.","period_of_significance":"circa 1809 -- 1950","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Still a single-family home held by the same family. The outbuildings are used for storage, and the well structure is a non-contributing resource.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.948959-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/26/6807/41680726/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/01000696.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000696/458b98981c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000696/458b98981c-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Oaks_farmhouse_near_Kents_Store.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Oaks_farmhouse_near_Kents_Store.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680726","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Oaks_(Kents_Store,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713318"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/fluvanna-county/oaks-the-01000696/"}
