It contains 12 contributing buildings and 2 contributing structures.","why_significant":"The district is one of the most intact sections of the Marietta Street industrial corridor, which has lost nearly seventy percent of its historic resources. It represents utilitarian industrial and commercial building types once common in Atlanta, and the commerce and industry of the corridor. Its street plan and rail-side loading docks reflect the city's development along the Western and Atlantic Railroad.","narrative":"Means Street is a narrow lane northwest of downtown Atlanta, lined with large brick warehouses and factories set close to the street and backing onto the rail line. The 8.5-acre district also takes in two commercial buildings on Marietta Street. W. B. Bass laid out the street in 1869. Standard Oil began oil storage and a cooper shop there around 1888, and furniture, buggy and candy manufacturers followed in the early 1900s. Loading docks facing the railroad survive, along with some stone walls and a stretch of cobblestone paving. On Marietta Street, the 1921 H.B. Davis Building, later the Hotel Roxy, and a c.1930 five-and-ten-cent store reflect the merchants who dominated that corridor. The district was listed for its architecture, commerce, industry, and community planning. It is one of the best-preserved remnants of the Marietta Street industrial corridor, most of which has been lost. Many buildings now serve as offices, lofts, studios and an arts center.","period_of_significance":"1869-c.1950","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other: commercial eclectic","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Buildings have been adapted to new uses including offices, lofts and artist studios, an arts center, a restaurant, and shops. One building between the Block Candy and Carriage Works buildings was recently demolished for structural deterioration.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.553963-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/01000648.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000648/5d5f5bbf91-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000648/5d5f5bbf91-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Alan Manton","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Allied_Lofts.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Alan Manton</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Allied_Lofts.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93208258","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Means_Street_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6804082"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/fulton-county/means-street-historic-district-01000648/"}
